Learn

As the boys herd cattle in the country side, they usually trap birds and when they get home, they are expected to give the parents their catch. They would then eat sadza with african vegetables while parents ate the envied bird meat caught by their children. The proverb is therefore derived from this practice. Hence the lesson is taken from the practice to mean the deeds of the child reflect on the parents. It is common to have parents basking in the glory, success or good deeds of their child as the children are mainly identified by their family/clan name. So when a child does something good it is said that so and so's child did this. The same applies if the child does something bad. Even if the male child married it was the parents who were responsible for paying bride price. If a child commited a civil crime it was the parents who were summoned to the community or village courts to answer for the child and pay the damages should the child be found at fault.
The proverb is used to remind parents that they are responsible for the children's actions hence it is important for parents to foster good upbringing to their children.
