English Meaning: You have had your day, and you my rest while you give way to the younger people.
Context: When grinding corn to make mealie meal, a specially made mat is used as a receptacle of the mealie meal as it comes from the grinding stones. With time this “grinding mat” wears out and becomes unfit for this purpose. As such a new mat has to be found. The proverbs derive from this and is rooted on the phenomenon that everything including human beings have a useful life.
Application: The proverb obviously applies to older people and is used either where the person is being appreciated for the good work he may have done during his service at a certain post or community. It can also be used to encourage people to allow younger people to do certain things that require more stamina.
